What is a same-day crown?

A same-day crown is a dental crown that is designed, made and fitted in a single appointment, rather than over two visits with a dental laboratory in between. At Park Road Dental we use CEREC technology, which lets us digitally scan the tooth, mill a solid ceramic crown on-site and bond it into place the same day. Because the whole process happens in the practice, there are no physical impressions, no temporary crown to wear and no second visit to return for the fitting.

The Primescan digital scan

Instead of the traditional putty impression, we capture your tooth with a Primescan intra-oral scanner. It builds a precise 3D digital model of the tooth in minutes, without the goopy material that can trigger gagging. The scan feeds straight into the design software, so the crown is planned on-screen to fit your bite and neighbouring teeth accurately. Digital scanning is comfortable, fast and lets us show you the plan for your tooth before we make it.

Milled on-site from ceramic

Once the crown is designed, a solid block of tooth-coloured ceramic is milled on-site by the CEREC unit while you wait. Ceramic is strong, hard-wearing and matched to the shade of your surrounding teeth, so the finished crown blends in naturally. The same digital workflow can also produce ceramic bridges to replace a missing tooth between two supports. Making the restoration in-house means the fit and colour are checked and adjusted with you in the chair.

When a same-day crown suits you

A crown protects and restores a tooth that is heavily filled, cracked, worn or root-canal treated, or that has broken down and needs full coverage to stay strong. Same-day CEREC crowns suit most of these situations and are ideal if you would rather avoid impressions, temporary crowns and multiple trips to Cheltenham. Some complex cases still benefit from a laboratory-made crown, and we will tell you honestly at your assessment which option is best for your tooth.

Same-day crowns, step by step

  1. Assessment and preparation. We check the tooth, then shape it under local anaesthetic to make room for the crown.
  2. Primescan digital scan. We capture a 3D scan of the tooth in minutes, with no goopy impression.
  3. Design and mill on-site. The ceramic crown or bridge is designed on a computer and milled in the practice while you wait.
  4. Fit the same day. We check the fit and colour, then bond the crown into place in the same visit.

Crown costs and health funds

Every tooth is different, so the cost of a crown depends on how much preparation the tooth needs and the material used. After we assess the tooth we give you a clear treatment plan and a written quote, with no surprises. All major Australian health funds are accepted and claimed on the spot, so if you have dental extras cover you can claim your rebate at the practice and pay only the gap.

Same-day crown FAQs

Do you offer same-day dental crowns in Bayside?

Yes. Park Road Dental at 155 Park Road, Cheltenham, offers same-day CEREC crowns and bridges for patients across Bayside Melbourne, including Mentone, Highett, Moorabbin and Beaumaris. The tooth is scanned, the ceramic crown is milled on-site and fitted in a single visit, so most cases need only one appointment.

How does a CEREC same-day crown work?

We prepare the tooth and take a digital Primescan scan instead of a goopy impression. The crown is designed on a computer, then a ceramic block is milled on-site by the CEREC unit. Once it fits and the colour is matched, we bond it into place — all in the same appointment.

How long does a same-day crown take?

Most single same-day crowns are completed in one visit of roughly one to two hours, including preparation, scanning, milling and fitting. Because the crown is made on-site, you avoid a second appointment and there is no temporary crown to wear while a laboratory makes the final one.

How much does a crown cost?

The cost of a crown depends on the tooth, the amount of preparation needed and the material used, so every case is different. After an assessment we provide a clear, written quote before any treatment begins. All major Australian health funds are accepted and claimed on the spot.
